Linux Mint 11 Review
Linux Mint Katya was a very good try to capture the true feeling you and I had when we saw or first tried Ubuntu. It was fast, especially on 1024 Mb of RAM (If I said 1 Gb which is what it is, people wouldn't know that in electronics its 10^3 not 2^8). So to the GUI a very controversial point in choosing a OS.
Unity is a shell interface for the GNOME desktop environment developed by Canonical Ltd for its Ubuntu operating system. Unity debuted in the netbook edition of Ubuntu 10.10. It is designed to make more efficient use of space given the limited screen size of netbooks, including, for example, a vertical application switcher[3] called the launcher.[4] Unlike GNOME, KDE Software Compilation, Xfce, or LXDE, Unity is not a collection of applications but designed to be used with existing GTK+ programs.[5] ~ Wikipedia
Well back to the subject, the GUI is very important and is implanted very well. So while they have the easy implemented Gnome 2.23, they have also the setup of it as a semi-windows setup. What that means is that it is very similar to Windows xp, but yet so far fetched. That means it will take time to get used to unlike Zorin 5. So even though an avid user of any OS, basically computer user. Who has the time to change, not a lot but it will take some time, 1-4 days for typical people to get the hang of it. So implementation, help, community, and ease of simplicity, gives Mint a high mark!
GUI ~ 9.5/10
Package Management
Well to Package Management. The packages are the same as ubuntu so I cant say much. Its easy, simple, and very divine.
Package Management ~ 9.25/10
Drivers
As in all of linux drivers are very automatic, and no need for human installing software for it as of CUPS. So not much, but I like the way Mint allows for a more compelling usage over the OS. So it is you more in control.
So Drivers score a 9.5/10
So now to the Overall~
Overall
9.5/10
So better then Ubuntu, do I like it more then Ubuntu, No. I have been using Ubuntu for a long time. Would I change to Mint if Ubuntu 11.10 is bad? Yes, indeed, Unity I don't know where it is going know. But I like it, if it turns out to get to a worse state then now, then Yes indeed.
Next week is Fedora 15!
So Farewell! Most pictures I left out.

Graphical User Interface
Katya uses Gnome 2.23, just like Ubuntu Natty. The difference, one uses a 2nd shell "Unity" and one is standalone. Yes Unity is a shell not UI.

Hi, saw you on Linux Mint facebook fanpage. Let's be linux friends.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that is I. I tend to use facebook very rarely. I have programming, and other things to do to take my time away from Facebook and other server based applications.
